New book on the captivity

Memories of the film *La vache et le prisonnier* starring Fernandel are often the only images that spring to mind when we talk about French soldiers taken prisoner in 1940. And yet, far from the world of cinema, 1.85 million of them were deprived of their freedom, held captive far from home and used as cheap labour. Drawing on testimonies from prisoners and their descendants, as well as a rich collection of objects made in the stalags, works of art, documents and original photographs, this book invites us to gain a better understanding of the driving forces behind a little-known history that has nevertheless left a lasting mark on so many French families.
